In the hugely popular Berlin area of Prenzlauer Berg, Deutsche Wohnen is making an ambitious project a reality: the full refurbishment of 253 existing properties, roof extensions offering 48 new residential units, new construction of 63 additional units and a redesign of the outdoor spaces.

Deutsche Wohnen’s Grellekiez neighbourhood is in the heart of Berlin, next to Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn railway station. With its refurbishment and new construction work, Deutsche Wohnen has made a major contribution to urban development in the area. Dialogue with residents and ensuring social responsibility have been crucial to us from the outset. At information events and in many one-to-one conversations, we’ve answered individual questions and explained the plans in detail. Deutsche Wohnen has also signed a cooperation agreement with the district on socially responsible implementation of the work.
The work centred around the full energy-related refurbishment and upgrade of existing residential units dating from the 1930s. Facades and basement ceilings were being insulated and the units were being connected to the district heating system. We have opted for a sustainable solution to replace the windows. Triple-glazed wood-framed windows were being used instead of windows with plastic frames. Sustainability played a key role in our new construction, too: a green roof allows rainwater to evaporate and provides excellent insulation, while a solar panel system is also being installed. The roof extensions featured a timber construction. A total of 111 new two- to five-bedroom homes have beeen created in a sought-after central location.
